When you think of stressful events, do the holidays automatically come to mind? Probably not. But according to the Holmes/Rahe Scale and other well-documented research, “The holidays” and specifically “Christmas” are listed among the top 15 causes of stress. That’s not really hard to believe given the emphasis on gift-giving, self-imposed deadlines, family interactions and the expectations for us to spend money on people we hardly know or only see on rare occasions.
In many cases, we can simply avoid those situation we know will cause us stress. However, the holidays are a totally different matter and it’s because we can’t avoid the emotional situations that come with the holidays that the stress in our bodies gets triggered even more.
So how do you know you’re under stress? What can you do to relieve the stress you know you’re facing now or will face over the coming weeks?
One of the things you can do is to understand the personal signs of stress and how they show up in your body. People react to stress in different ways; however, if you pay attention to the early warning signs your body gives you, you may save yourself from major illness in the future due to too much stress placed on your body, mind and emotions.
According to ehealthmd.com., there are 4 types of signals that your body is under stress:
1. Changes in body function and physical health
2. Changes in emotions and feelings
3. Changes in behavior
4. Changes in thoughts
Can you identify where in your body you might be holding on to stress?
