Do You Know What You Think About as You Spend Your Time?
Here’s a very important Time Management Strategy you can use to begin to better manage the time you have so that you have “enough time” to enjoy the life you’ve created. Did you go through the last Time Management Activity again and notice your problem areas? Where do you need to better manage your time? Did you notice any patterns? Are there one or two areas where you always seem to get stuck?
Finding the time to do more of what you want seems to be increasingly difficult. You are bombarded with requests and demands for your time. There are constant interruptions and distractions that take time away from what you should be doing and what you want to do. There are pressures from your job, your boss, your colleagues, your family, and even friends. And because everything happens much more quickly in this electronic age, you just don’t have enough time to get everything done.
It’s as if everyone wants your time and everyone but you succeeds in getting what they want.
Why is that? Why can’t you find more time for yourself to do the things you want?
If you used the time management tool in my last blog post, you might have noticed that your list of issues included:
- external pressures,
- being overwhelmed,
- poor planning,
- mindless routines,
- bad habits,
- unexpected events,
- things getting in the way
All of these may play a part in your life disrupting your ability to have enough time.
So what’s really going on here?
We all know we have 24 hours in every day. That means we have 1,440 minutes in every day. Which also means we have 86,400 seconds in every 24-hour period. How do you spend those 86,400 seconds each day?
Do you know how you spend your time?
In the last time management article, I asked you to notice how you spend your time. Do you remember what you did last week? Yesterday? Do you remember how you spent the last hour?
Do You Remember What You Thought About While You Were Spending Your Time?
Were you focused on your goal and what you were doing, or was your mind somewhere else?
If you’re not getting the results you want with your time, then maybe it’s because you’re not choosing to focus on the right things.
Developing the Right Mindset is the First Strategy for developing effective time management and for finding enough time in your life to do the things that matter to you.
This means really focusing on what you think about as you go through your day.
Is your mind filled with constant chatter? Are you continually doubting yourself or second guessing yourself? Are your thoughts mostly negative? Do you let your mind wander from thought to thought as you try to get things done?
Really take some time this week to notice what you think about as you spend time during your day.
- Start keeping a journal just to notice and keep track your thoughts for a week.
- At the end of each day, take 10 minutes to write down what your thoughts consisted of.
- Then write down whether or not you accomplished everything you wanted to achieve each day.
What happened? What did you discover about your thoughts? Did your thoughts help or hinder your ability to get things done?
