When it comes to personal and professional success, two of the most significant factors are your own mindset and who you spend time with. Do you believe in your vision and your ability to succeed? How important is it to succeed? What’s stopping you from reaching your goals?
We all spend time with people who influence us, sometimes positively, sometimes negatively. This influence is directly related to how successful we are. That’s because even though we’re all in charge of what we think, the people closest to us can influence our thinking profoundly, even without our realizing it.
Now, I’ve mentioned before that negative thinking attracts negative experiences. That’s because everything is energy and what you focus on you end up creating. But did you know there can be a more subtle energy at work when it comes to how others influence your time, your mindset and whether or not you achieve success?
People who struggle with some aspect of their personal or professional life often gravitate toward others like them. It’s our natural tendency to want to be with others like us – it helps us feel comfortable and safe. But if you spend your time exclusively with a group of influencers at the same level as you, you’ll find yourself stuck at that level. You’ll never move beyond it.
This is because when you’re around others who have challenges, you want to empathize with them and you want to relate those challenges to your own experiences. However, instead of feeling inspired, you find yourself feeling discouraged and demoralized. Then it becomes harder to push yourself forward, because your mind is focused on problems rather than positive solutions and your own success.
Then there’s the real fear of standing out, of rising above the crowd. It can be difficult to shine and experience real success when it requires you to rise above the people around you who influence you the most. It’s scary and can even feel like you’re being disloyal to those in your circle of influence.
You’re not doing yourself, your family, colleagues, clients or anyone else favors by staying small. In fact, you’re actually making everything harder on yourself! Surrounding yourself with people who have already successfully walked the path ahead of you, creates a positive mindset that helps move you forward – a much easier task than trying to move beyond the people who are inadvertently or subconsciously keeping you stuck or dragging you down.
Here are 3 time management strategies to upgrade your influencers and achieve more success:
1. Limit your time with people and conversations that are negative, that can diminish your dreams.
One of the toughest parts of reaching your goals is realizing that some of the people closest to you may be limiting your success through their own fears, lack of self-confidence and vision. You may need to create specific boundaries or even let go of negative relationships and influencers in order to keep your goals alive and your mind filled with a positive outlook to help you move forward.
2. Participate in activities that attract other successful executives, professionals and entrepreneurs.
Get away from the comfortable surroundings of your desk. Get out there and start meeting new people. You’ll learn a great deal from new colleagues, group members and participants when you opt for activities that are geared toward people who are already successful. Network, share your ideas and vision, listen and observe, become inspired – and then take action. New doors will open to opportunities you never imagined!
3. Work with a coach, mentor or more positive influencer.
Few people realize true success without help. There’s just no substitute for a highly energized, highly focused experience with a success-driven coach or mentor. You’ll be excited, motivated, challenged and held accountable for setting bigger goals to keep moving you in the direction of where your vision lies; and you’ll be inspired by their success!
If you’re not happy with the results you’re getting in your life now, then maybe it’s because you’re not focusing your mind and your time in the right direction and with the right influencers. You have to change your awareness, your approach, and maybe even those around you who are influencing your time and your success. The sooner you do that, the sooner you’ll experience the success you want.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us. It is not just in some; it is in everyone. And, as we let our own light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” Excerpt from A Return to Love, By Marianne Williamson
